This is some sad news. There will be some better sources soon as more information is known, but here's the text from http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2008-03-04-Gary-Gygax_N. htm
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A sad day for fans of role-playing games: The man who co-created Dungeons & Dragons is dead.
Gary Gygax died Tuesday morning at his home in
Lake Geneva, Wis. His wife Gail says the 69-year-old had been suffering
from health problems for several years.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons
in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game
known for its oddly shaped dice eventually was turned into video games,
books and movies.
It's considered the grandfather of fantasy
role-playing games and has inspired legions of adoring fans. Gygax's
wife says he always enjoyed hearing from them.
Just a bit of my own commentary here. I can't say that I personally ever played any pen and paper version of Dungeons & Dragons, but his creation and his influence can be seen in any form of RPG today, whether is a board game, a computer game, or any of the fantasy based MMOs of today. I think its important for anyone who has ever enjoyed any sort of RPG game ever to acknowledge what his D&D creation brought to the world and pay their respects. Thanks for everything you've done, good sir! This is for you.
